ATonce386SX software with IDE support for Lightning ST

Beitrag von czietz » 6. Dez 2025, 16:58

ATonce386SX software 5.25 – patched with IDE hard disk support

This is a version of the software for the ATonce386SX PC emulator card the with IDE hard disk support. Previously, it only supported ACSI hard disks.

Remarks about the software:
  • The software only runs with an IDE hard disk. It will crash if started on a system without IDE interface.
  • The hard disk must be in Atari byte-order! You might therefore prefer to use an IDE interface with hardware byte-swapping (such Smartswap in the Lightning ST).
  • Read the ATonce386SX manual carefully to learn about setting up hard disks, and the limitations inherent to its hard disk support. For example, partitions to be shared between Atari TOS and DOS must have 512 bytes per sector, and must be smaller than 32 MiB.
Since setting up a partitioning scheme suitable for the ATonce386SX and DOS can be a bit tricky, a pre-made bare-bones disk image is also included that has been successfully tested with the Lightning ST IDE interface. Some remarks about the disk image:
  • For copyright reasons, it comes with the demo version of HDDRIVER. While this does not impact the hard disk access from DOS running on the ATonce386SX, I strongly encourage you to install your own disk driver. Of course, this is not necessary when running EmuTOS.
  • TOS partition C: contains the ATonce386SX software. It is not accessible from DOS.
  • TOS partition D: / DOS partition C: contains a minimal installation of EDR-DOS: just the kernel and the command-line interpreter. It is accessible from EmuTOS due to EmuTOS’s superior hard disk support. It is not accessible from Atari TOS.
  • TOS partition E: / DOS partition D: is accessible from DOS, Atari TOS, and EmuTOS and can be used to move files between the systems.
